Good morning everybody. Thank you for joining.
As people login, we're just going to give it a couple more minutes to give more counselors opportunity to log in. So just sit tight and in a few minutes we'll get started.
Everyone's doing well today and excited that we're halfway through the week.
So just give it maybe one more minute and then we'll go ahead and get started. 'cause I do want to be respectful of your time and make sure that we have that we can get all of the information out to you and have some time to answer questions.
11:04:03 AM
Will this meeting be recorded?
Alright, well I will go ahead and go and get started. First, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Jessica Vanessa Siam, the assistant director for transfer recruitment and evaluation here in undergraduate admissions also today joining me on the web. And are we have our Nestos Guetta. He will be managing the chat today so if you need to submit any questions.
Ernesto Esqueda
11:04:20 AM
Hello Everyone! Yes it will be recorded.
While I'm presenting, he'll go ahead and be managing that portion. So, um, if we are getting a lot of questions, just go ahead and give us a little bit of Grace as we try to get answers out to you. You want to make sure we give you full, accurate answers. Also, at the end of the presentation will have some time for some Q&A as well, so if you.
If you don't get your question answered during the presentation, will be able to answer your question at the end. So jumping right in, I just want to say thank you all for joining today. There's a lot going on and we wanted to give you an opportunity to listen in to see what's going on at UCR, and admissions what's going on our campus and share that to students 'cause we know you are on the front lines. This is an interesting and very different time for us all.
And we want to make sure that our students are as supported as possible and you all are the ones to make sure that they are supported. So that's why we feel it's important to give you these updates. We're planning to do these updates once a month, so as the as we get new information as the COVID-19 situation progress is, we want to make sure that we give you that opportunity to learn more.
Throughout the summer, excuse me, so jumping right in, uh, we are here to talk about UCR admissions updates. So first thing that I want to just go over is the applicant timeline and just a refresher where we are currently in our admission cycle at UCR. So we are still releasing admissions decisions for transfer students. We've been admission releasing admissions decisions starting in March and are going through April. We are wrapping up.
The tail end of our decisions, so all of our transfer students should have their decisions before the end of the month. If you do have any students that have not heard back from us by the end of April, please encourage them to reach out to us. We normally do have a decision for them. Sometimes what happens is they may not link there my UCR account to their application, and that's really important for our updates to feed into their account to see those updates. So that's usually one of the things that we check on 1st.
Also, are Sir deadline for transfer. Students will remain June 1st, so as students are making their decisions in terms of where they want to attend in the fall. We still have that deadline as well.
A couple other updates about official documents. So, um, while we are going to be flexible with students submitting their official transcripts, we still strongly encourage them to submit their transcripts by the July 1 deadline.
So we want to make sure that our students are still able to get in their transcripts as soon as possible.
Looks like we're having a little bit of issues with our screen.
As I'm flipping through, you may not be able to see the slide that I'm on.
So let me go ahead and take a moment to see if I can work through that.
So I'm just working with Ernesto to see if he can.
See the slides that I'm changing too.
Do you see a UCR admissions update slide?
Yeah, so I'm on the UCR admissions update slide and again, I apologize is we're working through these technical difficulties. This this is the first time we're using these platforms, so as we're going through our webinars where working out these technical kinks, so I'm going to go ahead and switch through to our applicant timeline slide.
Again, we want to ensure that transfer students are submitting their Sir by the June 1 deadline and moving on to official documents is where we left of-. So again, the University of California system is being flexible with the transcript deadline for incoming students. So in general students will have through the first day of instruction to get their official transcripts into our office without the penalty of having their admission cancelled.
However, we still strongly recommend that if they can, students try to get in their official transcripts by the July 1 deadline as well as their official AP and IB scores by the July 15th deadline to avoid any potential issues with course registration at the end of at the end of August and early September, when transfer orientation is scheduled. Just to give you a quick background information about the transcript deadline so.
What we do with our transcripts is once we receive the official transcript, we verify a student eligibility and get those courses data entered into our system so that they can receive the appropriate advising during orientation. And that's why it's really important for students to get in their documents as early as possible so that we can go ahead and get that process and they don't run into any potential issues on the tail end before they enroll in classes in before they start. Classes at UCR now again, while the July 1 and July 15th deadlines.
Are still preferred. Students do have through the through the first day of introduction to get those transcripts in if they are having any difficulty submitting transcripts or depending on where the situation goes. If your campuses are experiencing any delays in getting official transcript out, we are looking to be flexible for that and that is across the University of California system.
Alright, so moving on to admissions updates so a couple updates for fall 2020. I know we've gotten a lot of questions from you about some updates that have been going around, so just want to make sure that I touch on those. Again, we're expecting to have all transferred decisions released by the end of April and just to touch on provisions of admission, so I'm sure you all are aware that all students have provisions of admissions set to their admissions decisions.
When they are admitted and the general one is, students need to maintain good academic standing in their last term. Typically what that looks like is they need to ensure that they earn. See grades are better in all of their in progress classes. Now if students are experiencing any issues. Again, this is an unprecedented situation and students aren't sure if they're going to earn passing grades.
Please encourage them to reach out to us. The earlier that they are able to reach out to us, the more options we can potentially give them to help them maintain their admission for fall 2020. Or if that's not a possibility, we can work with them to give them other options for admission including winter 2021. and I see a typo on my screen, I'll go ahead and get that updated so.
Again, we do have that winter 2021 option, which I think is great for students that maybe don't quite meet their requirements for fall admission rather than having to wait that extra year, they have that that winter 2021 option. So one of the questions I've been receiving from you, and I'm sure the rest of the transfer team has as well our past grades for spring 2020 and then as well as summer 2020. So UCR is accepting past grades for spring.
This summer 2020 semesters. Uhm, so I'm not also includes past grades for major preparation courses as well. We are excuse me trying to be as flexible with students as possible and so if a student has provisions for a specific grade and they do opt to go to a pass grade scale then we will go ahead and accept that and as long as they have a past grade, continue with their admission as long as there aren't any other.
Potential issues that come up.
So I do want to clarify that point for the The Spring 2020 and summer 2020 terms we will accept past grades as well as past grades for major preparation. Now this does include students that are coming in for the fall 2020 class as well as the winner 2021 class and.
The class is it depending on how the situation unfolds. For these terms, those grades will be accepted. We won't apply the past. No pass limit unit limit for these semesters.
And if you have any other questions, feel free to ask for winter 2021.
So we will come. We will be accepting, um, A tag applications for winter 2021 is a reminder the filing period is May 1st through the 31st and the winter application filing period is July 1st through the 31st. All courses need to be met. Need to be completed by fall 2020 for eligibility an in terms of open and closed majors, the only closed major we will have this year will be physics.
11:14:58 AM
may i receive a copy of this power point
And that major will be closed for tag as well as regular admission. So um, again, as a reminder, this webinar will be recorded an I would be happy to share the power point as well so you all have access to that. So those of you that attended today, we can grab your information and send this power point out to you for reference.
A moving on, so some updates about our spring outreach. This year we stoop to again the the situation for COVID-19. We have moved to a virtual spring outreach and we have.
Ernesto Esqueda
11:15:25 AM
Yes, thank you for your email address, Edward.
A plan to host a variety of webinars, live chats and continue to have advising appointments for students, so some of the webinars that are available for students are next steps to enrollment for admitted students still learn now that they've been admitted. What are the next steps that they need to ensure that they can attend in the fall, including talking about important dates and deadlines? Provisions of admission? We go into detail about that as well. Admissions presentations for perspective, students that are looking will apply.
2 one or 2021 in fall 2021 as well as life chats. So students just want to be able to pop in and just ask some general questions, especially admitted students. We have these live chat options available at the end of this presentation. I have a slide of resources and I've included the link to our webinars page where you and your students can view all of the webinars that we have planned so far. We just have our April schedule up and.
Within the next couple weeks will also have our may schedule up as well and we are also continuing advising appointment for transfer students. These are advising appointments are held every Friday and they're open to perspective students. I've also provided the link to that. Just another quick update. Some of our admission counselors may be reaching out to your campuses to maybe do some additional advising appointment with just your students. So just keep an eye out on your email for that.
11:17:18 AM
Darrell Roberson of West los Angeles College would like a copy of the power point
I've also be providing the contact information from for each of our admission counselors as well. So if you have questions and want to reach out, feel free to do so on our admissions website, we do have listed on there which schools are admission counselors. Service? However, that information is currently not up-to-date. We've had some changes in staff over the last few months, and so right now I'm working on making sure we can get that website updated.
And have all of the correct information for the schools that they serve is listed there. So if you just give me a little bit of time, will get that updated as soon as possible. But if you have any questions you can feel free to reach out to any of our staff as well as myself to figure out who your contact is or just to ask questions as you need them answered.
We are also planning our Highlander week live, so since we're not able to do our normal spring open house or Highlander day for admitted students, we have plans an alternative virtual event which will run a week long sewer. Highlander week live transfer edition will run from May 11th to the 15th.
Ernesto Esqueda
11:18:28 AM
Yes, will send it over to you Darrell.
We'll also have a variety of webinars, including next step to enrollment admissions, presentation, student panels at the different college offices will be providing presentations as well, so if students want to hear more about their college financial aid, housing will be presenting during this time. So all of those questions regarding housing, financial aid packages. I strongly recommend that you encourage your students to attend those sessions, so that way they can get their specific questions answered about housing.
Um, because there as well as financial aid. There are still some details in plans that haven't been confirmed yet, and the best place for students to get those questions answered would be directly with those departments.
So again, as a refresher, I just wanted to provide all of the contact information for our transfer stuff so we have Danielle Watson, Diana Medina, Donna Perez, Eddie Ramirez at an SOS gala and Maria Salazar. If we have any counselors joining from the Northern California region, I just want to point out that Maria Salazar is our new northern and Central California representative.
So any questions and she will be hopefully in the fall if we go back to normal, she'll be conducting visits out in that region.
And again, some resources for webinars are transferred by using appointments Highlander week live. I did also want to provide some FA Q Resources for Cove in 19th at our campus has developed as well as the general UC system FA Q for COVID-19. This also has some really great system wide information about past no pass grades, transcript information and any other systemwide updates on admission for.
Students as well as yourselves.
So with that I thank you all for joining and for listening to these updates. Again, we're planning to host these updates once a month. I recommend if you want to share this information with your colleagues or encourage them to attend these webinars.
Uh, definitely have them join to ask any questions. So with that, we'll go ahead and open it up for any questions that you will have.
11:20:33 AM
Thank you!! Jessica
11:20:44 AM
What majors will be open in Winter?
OK, so it looks like there was a question about, um, what majors will be open in winter. So um again, all majors will be open for winter 2021 for tag as well as regular admission with the exception of physics. So physics will be the only major closed for winter 2021. All other majors will be open for admission.
11:22:01 AM
could you elaborate a little on the Highlander
So there was a question about asking for a little bit more information about Highlander week live. So Highlander week live will run the week of May 11th through the 15th. So throughout that week we will be hosting a variety of web in our presentations similar to what we normally host during our imperson Highlander day will be hosting various next steps to enrollment webinars for students.
You are more than welcome to join in on those webinars as well. I believe there will be 3 offered throughout the week. At various times we want to ensure that transfer students have the opportunity to join as they are most likely juggling their online classes as well as other responsibilities. So we wanted to offer that that variety.
Uh, well I will be offering admissions presentations for any perspective students that would like to join as well as transfer student panels. I know that one of the things that's really important for transfer students is to hear about the experience of transfer students that have already gone through the process and already at the UCR campus. So opportunity from for them to hear directly what that experience looks like. Opportunities for resources, research how to connect.
Each of the college offices. So our College of Humanities, College of engineering, the natural cultural Sciences School of Business, public policy on Graduate School of Education will each be hosting their own webinars. They will be highlighting opportunities that are specific to their colleges for students. So students that have already been admitted. So if a student that was admitted to psychology, they can join the College of Humanities presentation to hear more about.
As well as financial aid, financial aid will be hosting a couple workshops throughout the week to talk more about financial aid.
Answer questions about students financially, packages and so forth.
And housing will also provide presentations during that week as well. So at the end of the presentation I have the link to the Highlander week live website where yourselves and students can see what the schedule will look like. Students are able to register for the event as well as register for these specific webinars they want to attend.
And so, depending on what their schedule is, they can the Register for those specific.
Presentations that are of interest to them.
11:24:50 AM
awesome, thank you
11:24:57 AM
Can UCR share a TAP/TAG presentation that we can share with students?
So there was another question that asked if we can share the tap tag presentation that can be shared with students and I would be more than happy to share that presentation. We actually just updated that we have using tap tag webinar that we're hosting once a week through so we had one last Friday and will have one this week in one next week as well as weekly through May.
And I can also share that presentation with you as well.
So that you have that for reference.
11:25:37 AM
Great information thank you so much!
11:25:39 AM
Thank you Jessica!
So again, if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask them, um.
I'll give it a few more minutes, and if you don't have any additional questions we can go ahead and and the web and our early.
Again, if you have any questions that come up after today, please feel free to reach out to any of our staff. I know many of you have already been reaching out with questions. Feel free to keep those emails coming. We really.
Want you to go ahead and share that information with students? Let them know that we are.
Always looking for ways to support our transfer students and make sure that they have all of the resources that they need, especially during this uncertain time.
11:27:41 AM
thank you again Jessica, very informative
There are a lot of uncertainties. One of the things that I didn't mention earlier regarding admissions were some of the other updates related to cope in 19 from our campus. So our orientation for transfer will be held online as well as you see our summer session. So if any of your students are interested in taking summer courses at UCR, summer sessions will be held on line as well.
11:28:16 AM
Can you also send me the TAP/TAG presentation
In terms of fall instruction delivery right now, we are planning to do in person delivery, but the campus leadership is coming up with a Plan B as well so we don't have a definitive answer on what the fall will look like in terms of instruction were being optimistic and hoping we can go back to regular in person instruction. However, we're still.
Ernesto Esqueda
11:28:31 AM
Yes, Darrell.
Going to be ready with a Plan B. Depending on how the situation progress is and what the instructions from the Riverside County Department of Health and the CDC recommend.
So give it a couple more minutes for any additional questions. Again, I just want to thank you all for taking the time out of your day to join, and we're happy that you all.
Came out to hear all our updates. We wish we could see you in person but we want to make sure that we can stay connected with you too.
Looks like we have an additional question coming in.
11:29:58 AM
I did have a question about modaility. Will students be penalized for their lab courses switching to an online modality?
So the question was, will students be penalized for their lab courses? Switching to an on line modality? As far as I'm aware you see the UC system does not.
I don't want to say doesn't care, but doesn't really take modality into consideration as long as the course has been approved. So on his deemed transferable.
I would say that if students are able to, you know if they're able to cover instructors are able to cover what they would in a lab, and they earn a passing grade that's posted on their transcripts, that something that we would just take as is.
As far as I'm aware, so I would be happy to dig into that a little bit more and provide some follow up, but from what I understand, modality really is not too much of an issue in terms of us taking them. Taking a course is transferable.
11:31:11 AM
Thank you. That is what I read as well. I just hear that question pop up a lot.
Ernesto Esqueda
11:32:02 AM
Thank you all! Have a great rest of your day and stay safe!
Alright, so there don't seem to be any additional questions. Again, I want to thank you all for joining. I also wanna think Ernesto for helping me manage the chat up and getting your questions answered. Please feel free to reach out if you need any assistance with anything. Please encourage your students to reach out to us as well and we hope you have a good rest of your day and again, thank you for joining.
